The day started out looking fairly dubious, the mountain behind Denia was shrouded in cloud. As we rode out to the start of the climb, the support van took a quick look up the mountain roads and we were advised against the route. So we in the medium group mad our way over to the Coll de Rates, did the trial up there, I managed something like a 23:15, which is respectable. The descent off the Rates was careful, a pair from one of the pro teams was klimping down, been doing some tarmac surfing along the way, with a torn tyre. There but for the Grace of God…
We then took a long loop round the coast and as we approached the coast we stopped at the Austrian Cake Shop and cafe, where the sun emerged, and after the stop we made our way in the brilliant sunshine over the Montgo top Denia. End of a good day’s riding, maybe not 140km, but better than it could have been. End of a good week’s camp.
