Frosty mornings and visting A&E

No club run, but gentle ride to Great Missenden.

This morning it was cold but with a clear sky it was too good looking a day to waste.  So, I took the Shorter (with the PowerTap wheel) off the turbo for a spin on the road.  A reasonable group turned up for the club run, but the consensus was that it was too icy for a safe ride.  Jon and thought better and headed off for a nice ride off on our own.  We made our way, mostly on the more major roads over towards High Wycombe for a tea.  All went well, the roads in our favour, with no mishaps on the way there.  After a stop for tea and cake we left for a different route home.  Soon after leaving we hit black ice and we both went over.  No damage to the bikes, but my right hand was painful (so was my shoulder, but less so) on taking off my glove it appeared to be cut, and painful.

So painful, it was difficult to ride.  We returned to our tea stop where ibruprofen was administered and i summoned up the courage to summon the wife for a rescue.  I was duly picked up and taken to what is called the “urgent care clinic” where A&E used to be.  I was seen quite quickly, sent for x-ray and a broken metacarpal diagnosed.  Plaster prescribed, lasting 4 weeks.  The nurse suggested no cycling for those weeks, but conceded that the turbo would probably be okay.

All in all, from summoning the wife, I was home again in only just over three hours.  I think we should be proud of our Health Service, and those who work in it!

So lessons from today?

  • the guys in the club with years of experience do have some wisdom
  • avoid side roads on frosty mornings
  • be thankful for understanding wives
  • be thankful for our health service

I’m off to find some more drugs, that first dose of ibruprofen is wearing off, and the wife thinks I need a shower, and I feel duty bound to take some notice of her at this point in time.
